AC TMI White Paper: The Vapor Deposition Process

How is the Vapor Deposition Process Used?

The vapor deposition process is often used to create coatings on automobile headlights that improve their performance, such as increasing their resistance to scratches or UV radiation, or enhancing their reflective properties. .

The Vapor Deposition Process

The vapor deposition process for automobile headlights is a manufacturing process that involves coating the surface of a headlight lens with a thin layer of material through a vacuum deposition process.

In this process, the headlight lens is first cleaned and prepared by removing any dirt, oils, or other contaminants from the surface. The lens is then placed inside a vacuum chamber along with the material to be deposited, which is usually a thin film of metal or metal oxide.

The vacuum chamber is then sealed, and the air inside is removed to create a low-pressure environment. An electric current is then applied to the metal, causing it to evaporate and form a cloud of atoms or ions in the chamber. These particles then condense onto the surface of the headlight lens, forming a thin, uniform coating.
